The Start was a Norwegian Steamer. On here final voyage from from Swansea to Rouen in France with a cargo of coal she was spotted by U boat cammander Johannes Lohs in U-57. It was 22 December and the Start had 14 crew on board including Captain Mikkelson. She was hit at the stern and sank so fast that only the Captain and second mate Brendtssen survived.

Today the Start stands 4m off the 38m seabed and well salvaged. When Steve last dived it in the late 80’s there were large congers everywhere around the wreck. The Bell has been removerd by divers
