On 2nd July 1918 SS Shirala , captained by Murray Dickinson, was en-route from London to Bombay with 213 passengers and a general cargo of Vehicle parts, telescopes, ammunition, diamonds and mail when there was an explosion on her port side. It is claimed she was sunk by UB-57  commanded by Johannes Lohs.
Eight of the crew and passengers were lost.
