Gibel Haman 1918

SS Gibel Hamel was a British Steamer first owned by Carr L of Newcastle. She was designed as a coal carrying ship and launched as SS Bambugh. In 1914 she was bought by Bland MH & Co. Gibralter and renamed “Gibel Haman”.
The British Goverment took control of her in 1918 and her official number changed to 104275.
On 14th September 1918 she was en-route to France from Swansea with a cargo of coal when she was struck by a torpedo from UB-103 cammanded by Thomas Bieber and 21 of her crew were killed.
Today she lies 15 miles off portland Bill and is mostly upright. She has substatial damage in the boiler area where she was hit by the torpedo.
